To date research work from Dr. Mukherjee's laboratory suggests that CASK is not only critical for information transfer and processing in the brain, but it is also a key regulator of brain metabolism. Thus, a brain without proper CASK function cannot keep up with the normal rate of brain growth after birth.
The next stage of Dr Mukherjee's research is critical for helping medical researchers and professionals, as well as children (afflicted by a smaller for age brain (microcephaly)), and their families.
Specifically, the project is geared to understanding the cellular mechanism by which brain growth is affected and develop strategies to prevent microcephaly.
We hope that the findings from this research will lead to a drug which may reduce the effects of cask gene mutations.
